10th November 2021
RICS recently Matrics announced its shortlist for the 2021 Young Surveyor of the Year Awards. Among those shortlisted are Charlotte Turner and Jake Green from Assent Building Control. Turner is currently an apprentice working in the role of Assistant Building Control Surveyor, while Green recently qualified as a Chartered Building Control Surveyor (MRICS) . Now in its 8th year, the awards highlight inspirational young professionals within the sector across the UK.
Iain Thomson, CEO at Assent Building Control, said: “We are thrilled to have not one, but two of our team representing the next generation of surveyors. At Assent, we prioritise attracting young people to the industry and awards like this are the perfect way to champion them while also letting others know the opportunities that building control has to offer.”
Green started his career in building control at a later stage than his peers, after originally working in electrical engineering. Green has excelled in his role, having qualified in November 2020. He is now a mentor for a graduate surveyor who recently joined the company and regularly supports the apprentice team members.
Green said: “Coming into the industry at a later stage in my career was nerve wracking at first but I was able to quickly find my feet, thanks to the support of Assent. The training offered by Assent allowed me to fast-track my career in a way I couldn’t have predicted and being shortlisted for this award is one of many opportunities that I’m so grateful for. Going forward, I’m keen to share knowledge, learn more and encourage young professionals into the industry.”
Turner started Assent’s Degree Apprenticeship in September 2020 which involved studying at University College of Estate Management (UCEM) to complete her BSc (Hons) degree in Building Control whilst also working at Assent Building Control, gaining first-hand practical experience in the industry she will eventually pursue a career in.
Turner said: “I’m thrilled to have been shortlisted for this award. This is a fantastic achievement at the beginning of my career in such a rewarding and exciting industry. A job interacting with others, consistently learning, and positively impacting society, is something I feel privileged to have. I hope to influence other young people, particularly women, that might be thinking of starting a career in building control.”
The awards are a highlight in the RICS calendar, recognising the inspirational and diverse young surveying professionals from across the UK. They showcase the professionalism and innovation that sits within the built environment and provide an opportunity to identify the leaders of the future.
The next round of judging will be undertaken by industry experts from across all specialisms and the winners will be announced at the ceremony on 19 November at the Hilton Park Lane.
