Richard began working in building control in 1983 and worked his way up the career ladder to become Princpal Building Control Surveyor at Leeds City Council before joining the commercial sector in 1998, where he went on to develop regional offices with STMC and Butler and Young.
His career in the public sector provided a solid foundation for skills development in complex buildings, sports grounds and licensed premises and his interest in fire engineering in complex schemes translated into a first class honours degree in fire safety in 2005.
Richard co-founded Assent Building Control in 2005 with John Dilley, born out of a desire to do things differently and to find positive ways to support clients' objectives. Assent has established a reputation for excellence in the sector as one of the leading building control organisations in the country.
Richard thrives in a leadership position, providing strategic direction to support the company's growth, as well as evaluation performance against KPIs and measurable objectives. His commitment to quality and governance gives him a vigilant oversight, as well as the capacity to manage resources effectively. Richard is also skilled in understanding and interpreting client objectives throughout the build process.
