Closing the Gender Gap in Construction

Skills shortages across the built environment has left the industry in desperate need of new talent. At the same time, there is a huge untapped pool of talent that could be taken advantage of. With women only making up 12.5% of the construction workforce, according to GMB, bridging this gender gap could help the construction sector to thrive.

At the same time, there must also be a focus on ensuring women in the industry have long and fulfilling careers that aren’t ended early in exchange for starting a family.

Jane Keely, director at Assent Building Control, has a wealth of experience in navigating the building control sector as a woman and a mother. She understands the benefits that a career in building control can have to women and thinks changing the misconceptions of the industry is the first step in bridging the gender gap. Keeley recently spoke to Planning and Building Control Today about her experiences and how she thinks the construction sector should move forward.
