UK Shortage of Building Control Professionals set to Cause Industry Disruption

Published On Tuesday 12 October 2021

Iain Thomson, CEO of Assent Building Control, talks to UK Construction Online about the critical need to attract new talent into building control careers, whilst it still suffers from the post Grenfell fall-out.

Approved Inspectors are decreasing in number with no sign of an influx of new talent to the sector. With nearly all buildings constructed in the UK requiring the involvement of building control, this presents a potentially critical situation for the sector.

The challenge for the sector is that building control is not a career of choice for most. To change this, the construction sector needs to take responsibility for changing the perception of the job, shifting the focus away from ticking boxes to delivering real consultative value to clients. This is why Assent is establishing a training academy which will help to nurture talent and grow our team from apprentices all the way through to directors.

Without the inspection of buildings by competent, qualified personnel, the risk of situations such as Grenfell happening again increases. A building control officer is there to ensure that a building meets the required regulations, protects the final users of the building and protects the reputations of all of the people involved in project.

Iain Thomson, CEO of Assent Building Control, talks to UK Construction Online about the potential impact on the construction industry unless moves are made to attract young professionals into the sector.
