Pavilion Road, SW1
This project in Cadogan Gate, Knightsbridge was constructed to an exact specification both to the structural and interior finishes. Due to the existing footprint size, a fire engineering approach was required to achieve the required level of habitual space and to increase the floors area as a development. A combined method of a full sprinkler system with an aspirating smoke detector system incorporating a smoke venting control was used. This projects shows without question that fire engineering solutions can work alongside with the properties of the highest interior specification.

The Quest
The Quest is a replacement dwelling in Swanage. The site is heavily wooded and enjoys a beautiful southerly aspect with a view over the Durlston Country Park.
The sloping site, with protected mature trees, very much dictated the positioning of the dwelling. Access is via the front of the property so we made use of a retaining wall which is faced in local Purbeck stone to define different levels and visually mask the vehicular route thus maintaining a clear view from the living spaces across the valley. The single storey house cantilevers over the retaining wall to deal with the level changes and views. The large cantilever has been achieved through two concrete planes: the floor and roof acting together like a space beam. The concrete structure is then in-filled with simple timber dry-lining, leaving the concrete frame visible externally.

Ashdown House
Ashdown House is a new residential dwelling in East Riding of Yorkshire built on a wonderful site on the edge of a Yorkshire village. The owners of the house chose to do a self-build project with a German supplier of off-site manufactured homes. The house is a timber house built according to the latest DIN standards for timber construction. Its walls are diffusion open, i.e. the materials used – arctic spruce heartwood, gypsum and paper panels and recycled glass insulation – are all breathable and there is no membrane within the wall that could cause any condensation. The house is very air-tight, outperforming Building Regulations by far and it has a fantastic energy A rating with 96 points. Fitted with underfloor heating on all storeys driven by an air source heat pump and photovoltaic panels, the house should have a very low energy bill.
Assent Building Control cooperated closely with the German supplier, Stommel Haus on all aspects of the Building Regulations approval. Please link to Stommel-Hause UK for further information.

River Road, Littlehampton
5 new town houses built on the banks of the River Arun in Littlehampton. Designed by RIBA award winning ‘John Pardey Architects,’ they reflect the Victorian warehouses that once occupied the site and that served the busy mercantile industry along the riverside. The three storey dwellings are built in engineered timber framework supported off a steel deck composite floor slab that transfers the loading to the new piled foundations via a steel framework that forms the open sided car park at ground level. The innovative design retains the Victorian flint and brick facades alongside the new cedar and glass clad elevations to give an interesting blend of ‘old meets new’ whilst overcoming issues such as the risk of flooding and the need to meet today’s energy efficiency requirements that modern day living demands.
