Sustainability in Commercial Construction: Getting Set for the Future Buildings Standard
30th June 2022

The Future Buildings Standard proposes changes to Part L and Part F of the Building Regulations. With the industry working towards being compliant, how can the construction sector meet the ambitious sustainability requirements of the new legislation?

Firstly, the industry needs to work harder in sourcing renewable and recyclable materials. In addition, setting common goals and working together can help to reduce wastage and have a positive impact in terms of cost. Embracing greener construction techniques, such as modular building and offsite construction, will help to speed up the processes and at the same time produce less waste and use less energy and machinery.

Overall, to adopt a zero-carbon framework the industry needs to embrace a collaborative approach. From designers and developers to contractors and building control professionals, all must pool their knowledge and expertise from the outset to cut carbon emissions. As an industry, we have a key role to play in the decarbonisation of commercial buildings.
